Greetings in the Lord!
Happy New Year and welcome to this month’s Bible Reading Adventure! The reading schedule is attached. Share a copy with a friend or family member. It is appropriate that we start 2011 in the Book of Deuteronomy. It was written by Moses as a reflection on the journey of the Israelites through the desert, their conquests and accomplishments, a repeat of the Ten Commandments and a reminder to obey God’s laws. As we begin the New Year, likewise, we should reflect on our journey, events and experiences God has brought into our lives, the principles we uphold and the commitment to live in ways pleasing to God. Thank you for your faithfulness and dedication in reading through the Bible as we learn and grow together! God’s abundant blessings to you throughout the coming year!
Commands of Chris t – “Bring In the Poor”
As part of our adventure, each month we explore a teaching of Jesus. This month’s “command” is found in Luke 14:13-14. Jesus said, “But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
Character of Chris t – Hospitality (vs. Unfriendliness)
Associated with this command is the character quality of Hospitality. Hospitality is demonstrating God’s love for others by blessing them with what He has given to us. True hospitality is bringing guests to a home in which the character of Chris t is being lived out on a daily basis. (Commands of Chris t, Series Six, Institute in Basic Life Principles, 2004)
